Paralympics in PE

This week in PE students have been exploring and experiencing events similar to those seen at the Paralympics. There have been robust discussions about what the Paralympics are, how they came about and why it is important. Children have spoken about the opportunities given for those with a disability to compete in a safe and competitively even environment, with many realising that not all disabilities can be noticed just by looking at someone - the INVISIBILITY of DISABILITY

Students watched short videos of several events showcased at the Paralympics, as well as other sports that support people with disabilities, and had the opportunity to try these different events for themselves. Some modifications were made to suit the stadium environment and the equipment available. Some of the events tried throughout the week were:

  • Goalball
  • Sitting Volleyball
  • Guided Running
  • Seated Athletics - javelin (using a pool noodle), shot put, discus
  • Seated bowling
  • Blind Cricket

Students acknowledged that whilst the activities were difficult, they gained some understanding of the challenges faced by those who live with a disability every day. They also noted that the Para-athletes were great examples of two of our school values - resilience and courage. Many students hoped to continue to carry forward the same “I can” attitude of the Paralympians in future PE lessons.
