Gospel of the Week

Luke 18:9-14

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

The publican returned to his home justified; the pharisee did not.

Jesus spoke the following parable to some people who prided themselves on being virtuous and despised everyone else, ‘Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood there and said this prayer to himself, “I thank you, God, that I am not grasping, unjust, adulterous like the rest of mankind, and particularly that I am not like this tax collector here. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes on all I get.” The tax collector stood some distance away, not daring even to raise his eyes to heaven; but he beat his breast and said, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” This man, I tell you, went home again at rights with God; the other did not. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the man who humbles himself will be exalted.’

Dear Parents, Carers and Guardians,

The Gospel reading this week speaks of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector:

The Pharisee: Represents someone who is outwardly moral, follows the rules, and thinks very highly of himself. He sees himself as better than others because of his good behaviour.

The Tax Collector: Represents someone seen by society as corrupt or morally compromised (tax collectors were often despised in that time). But he’s aware of his flaws and sincerely seeks to become better.

Two people go to a place of prayer. One talks about how good he is and how he’s better than others. The other admits his faults and quietly asks for forgiveness.

In the story, it’s the second person — the one who acknowledges his own shortcomings

It is important to recognise that -

Humility is more powerful than pride - Pretending to be morally superior often leads to lack of self-awareness.

Sincere self-reflection matters more than appearances - You don’t grow as a person by comparing yourself to others or boasting about your goodness.

We’re all flawed - The parable encourages compassion for others and for ourselves — not judgment.

This week Meg has been on a well-deserved break and has left me in charge of the school. We have had a busy week beginning with our Year 4’s Monopoly Dreams excursion. The students worked on teamwork, critical thinking skills and problem solving. A highlight of the excursion was a 4D movie where the chairs moved and water was sprayed at them. As always, the student behaviour highlighted our school values, and they represented our school positively.

On Friday our Years 2s and 5s will be experiencing the Cosmic Dome incursion at school. A dome set up as a planetarium will inspire scientific learning about space and the world around us. We are looking forward to hearing about this experience.

Our Regional Athletics team will be competing in their qualifying events on Friday.

Hannah 4VR – Long Jump

Maluil 4MR – Long Jump

Aluk 4VR – High Jump

Srina 5SM – Shot Put

Faith 5SA – Discus

We wish these students all the best in their events and they enjoy their day

We keep the Urquhart family in our prayers as they grieve the loss of Aaron Urquhart. Much loved father to Lydia, Grace and Kobi, husband to Danielle. May he rest in peace

Take care and God Bless,

Lisa

Congratulations to all our students who celebrated their First Holy Communion over the last two weekends! This was a very special moment in their faith journey as they received Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time.

We are so proud of the reverence and joy they showed in preparing for and taking part in this sacred celebration. A heartfelt thank you to the families, teachers, and parish team for their support and guidance throughout the preparation.

It was lovely that some of our past students were able to attend to run a reflection day session with our students

Wellbeing newsletter
Hi everyone, I hope term 4 is travelling well.

Just a reminder to all our valued community the Wellbeing Room at St Patrick’s is open before school, recess and lunch for anyone in need. It has been great to meet and chat with parents in the mornings and after school.

Please reach out via phone, email or in person if you or your school child is needing some extra support or advice with and Wellbeing or Mental Health concerns.
The village raises the child right! We are here to support you. In this week’s newsletter you will find the new and updated information from a fabulous Community support service – Orange Door. Please take the time to read or save the information. It is a very valuable resource for everyone.

I have also provided some information about grief in this newsletter. This is provided thanks to Headspace. Sadly many of our families have been impacted recently. If you need some extra support, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Have a safe and calm week.
Kelly Wilson.

HAPPY DIWALI!
We wish everyone a blessed Diwali! During our Cultural Club session on Monday, we celebrated the Diwali festival by watching a short video that explained what Diwali is and how it is celebrated around the world. One of our students also volunteered to showcase his Indian traditional dance, the Bhangra, and soon everyone joined in and danced together!

In the staffroom, our EAL Teacher, Yoke Yee prepared a selection of Diwali snacks and sweets for all staff to enjoy—a wonderful way to share in the spirit and flavours of the festival.

Substance Use & Addiction

Substance use and addiction are complex issues that can affect young people in many different ways. While some may experiment out of curiosity or peer influence, others may use substances as a way to manage stress, anxiety or emotional pain. What may begin as occasional use can sometimes become a pattern that impacts mood, motivation and wellbeing. The developing teenage brain is particularly vulnerable to the effects of alcohol, vaping and drugs, making early use more likely to lead to harm.

For many families, understanding substance use means looking beyond the behaviour to what might be driving it. Risk-taking is a normal part of adolescence, but for some young people, it can also be a signal that they are struggling to cope. Substances can offer temporary relief, but they can also mask underlying issues such as loneliness, low self-esteem or poor mental health. When left unrecognised or unsupported, substance use can interfere with school performance, relationships and emotional development, leading to more serious challenges later in life.

This edition of SchoolTV guides families to help young people develop resilience, self-awareness and the skills to make healthy, informed choices that protect their wellbeing into adulthood.
